CREATE 2021 Results (Updated December 2021)

We proudly present our West Campus High School students who participated in this year’s Construction Industry Education Foundation: CREATE Mentoring Program. The CREATE Mentoring Program stands for “Construction, Re-development, Engineering, Architecture, Trades, & Education”.

Our students received the opportunity to work with various mentors from the engineering, architecture, and construction industry to simulate the comprehensive process of planning, designing, and building a structure. They had to bring a Career & Technical Education Program to West Campus and design a building that matched both the program and existing buildings. They also got to visit active job sites and attend the Annual Competition/Awards Banquet to present their projects against other participating schools from California.

Congratulations to everyone who participated and received awards for this incredible opportunity!

Two teams participated in the competition this year. “Gardeners of the Galaxy” and “West Campus Car Club”.  The Gardeners of the Galaxy team won the Best Presentation Award.

The judges were very impressed with the quality of the presentations for both teams. They also made numerous comments about the professional quality of work they submitted.

We have a wonderful group of students and mentors involved with the CREATE program this year. The pictures show students, parents, and mentors at a site visit during the construction of the Richards Blvd project in November 2021. Our mentors are Civil Engineers, Structural Engineers, Architects, and Builders.

CREATE Program

  • Trades
  • Education

The CREATE Program exists to educate and inspire students to pursue career pathways that create the built environment. Industry professionals mentor student teams in a 12-week competition to answer a real-world problem. Students learn about career opportunities in architecture, engineering, and the construction trades; visit local architecture and engineering offices; visit active construction job sites; attend Trades Day; and compete with other regional high schools in front of industry judges.

Program Overview:

  • Students meet as a school team a minimum of 10 sessions during the fall.
  • Students receive a problem to address in the built environment and work collaboratively with peers and industry mentors to develop a solution which they present at Competition Day.
  • Knowledge needed to solve the problem will be learned during working sessions and career presentations in construction, the trades, engineering, and architecture.

A minimum of two field trips will be included:

  • Other suggested field trips can be to architectural firms, engineering offices, active construction job sites, or apprenticeship training facilities.

CREATE 2021

We will be competing against other schools on December. We will have two teams. “Gardeners of the Galaxy” and “West Campus Car Club”.

Here is the project problem statement.  ”Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs have become increasingly popular as part of high school curriculum due to their proven history of preparing students for filling both current and future job demands. The CREATE Advisory Board invites proposals for the creation of a new, single-room CTE ‘Building of the Future’ on your high school campus. The building must house a CTE program of your team’s choosing that best fills a need at your school”

CREATE 2019 – Competition Results

West Campus took two teams to the competition. By the end of the day, West Campus students earned the Award for Best Presentation (for a bio-waste heating method that employs kitchen food scraps) and the Curveball Award (for responding to an on-the-spot surprise challenge: adding an energy-saving feature to their design). West Campus also received very strong positive feedback in consideration for the Best Model Award.

Mr. Brown was impressed by our teams: “The students were amazing. They were enthusiastic and professional the entire event and gained a lot from watching all the other schools present.” This is the third year that West Campus has participated in CREATE, and this time even Mr. Brown’s efforts were recognized: He received the Award for Best Instructor. ”I’d like to thank the teachers at West Campus for preparing our students to go out and be amazing,” he said.

In addition to the competition awards, four West Campus seniors were recognized during the luncheon with scholarships from the CREATE program:

The team started off with all new members. We did pretty well, no awards this year. But looking forward to 2021.
